Another policeman has run into problems with the law after he was caught in the act of smuggling.
Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that Comptroller of Customs, Carl Felix imposed a $5000.00 fine on the officer who was nabbed in the early hours of Saturday morning trying to remove several items of vehicle parts from the Grenville jetty.
The police officer, already on suspension from the force, was apprehended by a three-member squad from the Enforcement Division of Customs, headed by Brian Joseph.
The officers were on routine patrol following reports of illegal activities being conducted on the jetty especially among vessels plying the Grenada/Trinidad route.
According to a well-placed source, the Police Officer already under suspension from duties, was also forced to surrender his white Escudo jeep, that was loaded with the vehicle parts.
It was take away to the nearby Grenville Police Station and impounded. Investigations carried out by the Customs Officer suggest that the parts were taken off the motor vessel, Clarion J2.
The source said that the detained police officer was requested to report to Customs House on the Carenage where he was ordered to pay approximately $1700.00 in duties for the seized items, plus the $5000.00 fine on the spot.
He was charged by the Comptroller for knowingly engaged in the fraudulent evasion of Customs duties. There has been no official reaction from the High Command of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) on this development involving one of its members.
