Nadia Bishop, the daughter of executed Grenada Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop is due to take up duties shortly as the island's new Ambassador to the United Nations.

An authoritative source told GRENADA TODAY that the appointment was ratified at Monday's sitting of Cabinet which was presided by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas.

He said that the submission was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David and met with approval from the rest of the Cabinet of Ministers.

A lawyer by profession, Nadia Bishop is due to take over from Dr. Angus Friday who was appointed to the post by the previous New National Party (NNP) government of ex-Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell.

The source said that the daughter of another ex-Prime Minister, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy is tipped for an overseas diplomatic posting with the NDC administration. Marcelle Gairy is believed to have accepted the offer made to become resident Ambassador in Beijing to Mainland China. She is the likely replacement for Joslyn Whiteman, who landed the post under the NNP administration.

Ms. Gairy first served her country as High Commissioner to London under the Mitchell government. However, Gairy abandoned the job after a public row with Mitchell which resulted in her coming back home to campaign against his party in the 1999 general elections. The female envoy brought to light a controversial deal in which the Mitchell government had entered into a secret arrangement with some questionable characters in Europe to raise 100 million U.S dollars in promissory notes.

Gairy brandished the notes which bore the signature of Dr. Mitchell and his former Director-General of Finance, Dr. Linus Spencer Thomas. The source told this newspaper that another prominent female, Dr. Dessima Williams is earmarked for the position of new Grenada Ambassador to the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the United States.

Williams is returning to the same job in Washington that she held during the 1979-83 rule of the leftwing People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) of the late Bishop. The current holder of the post is Ambassador Denis Antoine, an appointee of the last regime.

Speculation is rife that Williams had preferred to serve as Ambassador to the United Nations and not return to the OAS. There are also reports that the Thomas government intends to recall home Joan Marie Coutain who is the island's Ambassador to the european Community.

Coutain is best remembered for the visit she made to Switzerland in June 2000 with then Prime Minister Mitchell in which he is accused of accepting US$500, 000.00 from international fraudster, Eric Resteiner in exchange for a diplomatic posting. The Thomas government is seemingly bent on giving most of the diplomatic posting overseas to females since Ambassador Ruth Rouse has already been notified that she would be sent back to Britain to serve as High Commissioner to London.

The current Acting High Commissioner to Ottawa Jenny Coombs is expected to remain on the job. Meanwhile, NDC activist Derek James is tipped to replace Allen Mc Guire as the new Grenada Consul in New York.
