Wicked, shameful and scandalous.

Sir Daniel Williams

These are the only words that can come to our mind at the moment in referring to the deal for the sale of all those 20 acres of State lands that is home to the Grenada Grand Beach Resorts. And Governor-General, Sir Daniel Williams should be ostracized for facilitating the sale of this prized asset with not one cent going into the National Treasury for use by the ordinary people of Grenada who own the lands.

It is nothing short of madness for any patriot of the homeland to sign onto a Deed of Conveyance of the sort on the eve of such an important general elections as July 8. The situation is even more disturbing given the fact that Sir Daniel's own law firm was the one used to do the legal paper work for the sale of the land. Where is the transparency in the deal?

Is it any wonder that Sir Daniel's own law firm played a pivotal role in the operations of the financially-plagued Capital Bank that was started by his buddy and close friend, Finton De Bourg? What has made this newspaper even more angry is the demand being made by Sir Daniel for the current government to pay him all his gratuity on demitting office.

It is our understanding that Prime Minister Tillman Thomas informed his Cabinet colleagues that the GG told him at a meeting that he was ready to leave office at the end of October but wanted all monies owed to him to be paid up front.

How many times have you heard Sir Daniel address the nation and extol the virtues of love and commitment to Grenada? How can anyone forget his many speeches calling on all of us to make sacrifices for the homeland and to love and respect each other?

Is it any wonder that our children are looking around for role models and cannot seem to find anyone to look up to in the society? It is people like Sir Daniel who have been sucking every ounce of blood and juice that flow from the veins of Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique.

The evidence is there for all to see. This country suffered two major hurricanes in recent years (Ivan and Emily) and most Grenadians lost their roofs and were forced to undergo real hell and hardship. As part of the sacrifice to help rebuild the previous regime was forced to implement a National Reconstruction Levy on salaries.

The official home of the Governor-General was destroyed by the hurricane and Sir Daniel was forced to operate from his own private quarters. He should have been the first to set an example for all Grenadians to follow in terms of love for country.

However, the poor taxpayers of this country were made to pay him in excess of $13, 000 a month in rent to live in his home at a time of national crisis. GRENADA TODAY cannot afford to use nice diplomatic language in referring to the behaviour of this misfit in the Office of the Governor-General.

We can only show and give respect to Sir Daniel if it is deserving. And the manner in which he allowed the Grand Beach land sale to go through raises more than an eyebrow. Our call is for Prime Minister Thomas to reject the demands of Sir Daniel and boot him out of office right now over the Grand Beach land deal.

All efforts should be made to ask the Queen to remove the current holder from the post and allow for someone with dignity and integrity and a sense of national pride and commitment to the plight of Grenadians to take his place. The problem with Grenada is that too many hypocrites are running around the place.

There are those in our midst who are not happy with Sir Daniel and are in solidarity with the comments issued above about his deplorable behaviour in office in the last decade. However, these people will keep their mouths shut in order to continue to get the little invitations that are on offer every now and then to attend the cocktails and social functions hosted by the GG and the powers-that-be.

Our commitment is to smoke out all the misfits in public office.
