GRENADA TODAY is concerned about evidence that is emerging that attempts were made by certain elements in high places to interfere with the independent investigation being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) into the Lucas Street spying incident.

A junior member of the Special Branch of the Force had filed a formal complaint to CID that he was beaten and held against his will by certain members of the main opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the February 26 dramatic episode.
The policeman gave an initial statement to the CID officer in charge of the investigation.

However, it appears that persons outside of the police force did not like the look of the first statement and prepared another one on the events clearly aimed at influencing the investigation.

An ugly attempt was definitely made at interfering in the due process that our citizens expect from an independent police force.

GRENADA TODAY calls on Police Commissioner Winston James and his Police High Command to clear the air on this very outrageous act committed by persons not known to be members of the police force.

This takes us to a most important issue concerning the role of the Superhuman Hugh Wildman, as it relates to his role with the Police Force. Is Wildman still performing the task of Legal Advisor to RGPF? Can he still continue in that role while serving as Legal Advisor to the Cabinet of Ministers? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

What advise would Wildman give to a member of the Cabinet who might be the subject of a police investigation? As a matter of fact can the police trust his advice in such circumstances? GRENADA TODAY is concerned about Wildman's frequent interaction with our police force while having his feet inside the halls of the Cabinet Room of Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Claudius Mitchell.

The two statements that came in the name of Officer 77 Noel on the Lucas Street incident will only serve to create suspicion in the minds of many about fair play where the police are concerned. The days of kangaroo trial should be long gone and over with in the Spice Isle. Is this the type of progress that the powers-that-be keep talking about that must be continued under the watch of Keith Claudius Mitchell?

There are those who are seemingly bent on speaking to the law, our law courts and our Constitution which is the Supreme law of the land in their own whims and fancies. It is a dangerous precedent when forces outside of RGPF can attempt this extremely vulgar and outrageous act of trying to manipulate and influence the course of investigation by members of our CID.

How many persons might have been sent to jail innocently by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in a particular era of years gone by? This might have been the order-of-the-day in a certain jurisdiction in the Caribbean but must not be allowed to gain a foothold in our Spice Isle.

Thank God, we still have police officers with decency, integrity and a sense of fair play who would follow the proper course of the law and not fall to any wild west behaviour. The DPP is the legal person to take advice from and not those whose only interest is to serve their masters whether it means twisting the law to achieve certain political ends and objectives.

As the reign of Keith Mitchell and his NNP come to an end, one can expect more panic and acts of desperation aimed at seeking confrontation against opponents in an attempt to declare a State of Emergency and the institution of rule by decree.

That's how dictators the world over tend to behave. Do you recall the recent statement made by Keith Claudius Mitchell that he does not see anyone around at this point in time to hand over the power that was entrusted to him by the people.

He is clearly telling Grenadians that he intends to leave on his own accord and not based on their wishes in free and fair elections. GRENADA TODAY wants to send a message to Keith Claudius Mitchell: The time is drawing near, elections must be held no later than November 27, 2008. Only a coward will go beyond that five year cycle in our electoral process.

Do we need to remind Dr. Mitchell once again about our prediction that he will eventually exit office as the most disgraced person to ever occupy the chair of Prime Minister of this country. His behaviour seems to suggest to us that Keith Claudius Mitchell  already senses that he is falling from power and only moments away from finally hitting the ground in the Botanical Gardens.

It will be good news for Charles Howland and others who are waiting in the U.S to continue their legal matters in New York against the Grenadian leader who has been granted conditional immunity from prosecution in the United States.
