Senior Executive Members and candidates of the main opposition, National Democratic Congress, NDC, led by Opposition Leader Tillman Thomas were well received when they toured the St. George's Market Square on Saturday.
Both vendors and shoppers were happy that members of the NDC visited the market to observe the unsuitable conditions under which they have to cope.
The vendors complained that whenever it rains, sales are significantly affected as there is not adequate shelter for their goods.
They were also adamant that despite the recent renovation, the market is yet to be completed and the conditions continue to be unbearable.
Thomas said developing a proper market and creating better conditions for vendors will be high on the priority list of a future NDC government.
According to Thomas, workers such as vendors and other lower income earners have often been neglected by the government.
The NDC leader said these persons play an important role in developing the country and more resources should be allocated to assist them.
The shoppers also complained to the NDC team about the cost of living in Grenada."We need you all in there to see what you can do to change things "round", one woman told the NDC delegation.
"We are confident that with your help and with the inspiration of the people all around Grenada change is going to come", Thomas replied.
St. George's Member of Parliament Peter David also listened attentively to the complaints about the market."We have heard what the people are saying, and they have legitimate grouses which must be addressed", he said."Boy when you poor, you're exposed", one vendor quipped.
She was comforted by MP for St. George's North East, Nazim Burke, who also expressed disappointment with the circumstances under which the vendors are forced to carry out their livelihood."Every stop like this, as we go around the country, we are becoming more convinced that we have the right vision for the country", he said.
"Our vision is about empowering people and lifting them out of the hand-out syndrome and poverty", Burke said.
Other NDC candidates on the tour included Ingrid Rush of St Andrew's North east, St Andrew's South-west candidate. Sylvester Quarless, Karl Hood of St George's South East, Ingrid Jackson of St. George's North West, and Member of Parliament for St. George's South, Glynis Roberts.
