A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell on Sunday to mark the official commencement of the new Levera Eco-Resort project.
The occasion was a formal reception attended by government ministers and officials, members of the business community, and St Patrick's residents at the Levera Resort Clubhouse.
Prime Minister Mitchell was assisted by Earleen Taylor, Grenadian-born wife of new owner, Paul Taylor.
In a short speech at the ceremony, Mrs Taylor said the intention of she and her husband was to create a long term legacy to Grenada and its people, particularly the residents of St. Patrick.
In building the island's first world-class Eco-Resort at Levera, important sustainable employment and business opportunities will be generated in the north of the island, giving a welcome boost to the economy of the area.
A release from the promoters of the project said that work has also started "on a committed regeneration and conservation program, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture's Forestry Division and local and international conservation organisations".
"This will concentrate particularly on the enhancement of the National Park, and protection of Levera Beach and the turtle nesting sites, for the benefit and enjoyment of Grenadians and visitors alike", the release added.
The Resort is currently scheduled to be completed by late 2009 and put in the hands of an international operator.
The aim is to bring world-wide focus on Grenada as an eco-destination, in keeping with the natural beauty of the island and its environment.
