A Grenadian parliamentarian has appealed to nationals to "put God first in everything'' and to "love one another.''
National Democratic Congress MP Glynis Roberts, speaking to a group of Pentecostalist Christians at a rally last Saturday, also stressed the need for greater unity, respect and love among the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.
"Remember always to love your neighbour as yourself, to be good competitors and companions and to be the best brother or sister ever,'' the opposition Member of Parliament told the group at the Morne Rouge Playing Field, which is in Roberts' South St. George constituency.
The rally followed an earlier around-the-island motorcade.
The event, commemorating the 34th anniversary of Grenada's Independence, saw hundreds of participants dressed in national colours, singing and praising God.
The motorcade and rally, organised by the Tempe-based Latter Rain Revival Centre, was titled "Revival in the Land: Grenada be Free.''
The concert-styled rally at Morne Rouge was punctuated by brief addresses from Roberts and Minister of Youth, Senator Emmalin Pierre.
The government minister commended the organisers of the event and also extended independence greetings on behalf of the NNP administration.
Roberts, in her independence greetings, said that as the nation celebrates, "we need to be ever conscious of God and the very presence of his son, Jesus Christ, in all of us.''
She welcomed the sight of Grenadians getting together on the occasion of the anniversary of independence, but suggested that more ought to be done to bring people together on an ongoing basis.
"This bringing together should not be on the big occasions as now, but daily as we battle against the various challenges facing us such as disrespect for each other (and) disunity among ourselves,'' said Roberts.
"I appeal to all of us who are leaders to respect each other and see everyone's strengths and weaknesses as God's gift to humanity, remembering that He has made us to His own image and likeness.''
