A government of the National Democratic Congress will have strong and cordial relations with the new Democratic Labour Party administration Barbados, says opposition Grenadian parliamentarian Peter David.
As the National Democratic Congress' spokesman on Foreign Affairs, David met with the Barbadian External Affairs Minister during the swearing in of the cabinet of the DLP government led by Prime Minister David Thompson.
"I was delighted to be my party's representative at the swearing in ceremony,'' said David, "and to bring personal greetings from my party leader, Honourable Tillman Thomas.''
David, the NDC General Secretary and MP for the Town of St. George, also met with the new Barbadian Foreign Minister, Christopher Sinckler and described the encounter as being "very friendly.
Speculation is rife that Congress is looking towards the DLP for assistance in its efforts to unseat the New National Party (NNP) of Prime Minister Mitchell which has been at the helm of government for the past 13 years.
In the January general elections, the DLP routed the Barbados Labour Party of Owen Arthur, who was seeking a third consecutive term as Prime Minister. The DLP won 20 of the 30 seats contested.
In a message sent to Thompson immediately following the Democratic Labour Party's win, Thomas said the DLP's victory "will serve as an inspiration to our own (NDC) struggles, and to Grenadians as a whole, who are similarly hoping for political change.''
The NDC has said it is ready for an election but Prime Minister Keith Mitchell has given no indication of when he'll call the poll.
At the recent convention of the New National Party, even the government's own Attorney-General, Elvin Nimrod implored Dr. Mitchell to call an election, urging him to "pull the trigger.''
A brief statement seen on the NNP website last week indicated that the date for general elections will be announced in November.
It was quickly pulled off when the newly re-elected Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NNP, Terry Forrester was approached by this newspaper about the date.
Forrester said that the Webmaster for the site, Nazim Benjamin informed him that he did not know who placed the message on the website.
The NNP official did not rule out the work of saboteurs.
