A leading youth organiser in the country, George ŒPorgie' Cherubin is keen on seeing the reintroduction of the Cadet Corp in Grenada.
Cherubin said he is committed to seeing this take place in light of statements being made that the young men of Grenada are an endangered specie.

The former soldier in the 1979-83 disbanded People's Revolutionary Army (PRA), was once associated with the now defunct Cadet Corp.

Speaking at a public meeting last week Sunday organised by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Cherubin   said that for four years now he has been encouraging the Minister of Youth, Emmalin Pierre to have the Cadet Corp form part of the imani programme.

"I had a promise from Emmalin a few months ago that next independence parade we will see a cadet platoon on parade. Let us look forward to it if it is there," he told the gathering at La Borie, St. George's. Cherubin stated that before Sen. Pierre became a Government member, she consistently called on him each time that she had youth work to undertake.

"Since she became a senator, she hasn't been calling me, but I have been calling her in every call-in (radio) programme to let her know I am interested in the Imani programme," he said. According to Cherubin, each time he looks at the Imani programme he sees more females than males.

He charged that youth work on the island did not begin with Sen. Pierre who professes to be the number one youth worker on the island for the New National Party (NNP), and that it will not end with her.

Cherubin who endorsed the candidacy of Pastor Karl Hood said he was confident that the biggest casualty coming out of the next general elections will be the Deputy Prime Minister, Gregory Bowen in South-east St. George's.

The issue of the Imani workers was also addressed by NDC's General Secretary, Peter David who is the current Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George. David dismissed claims in government quarters that Congress was planning to disband the programme if his party gets into office.

"Brothers and sisters, this is just propaganda from a government that sees itself in its last days. We do not plan to fire the Imani workers. We do not plan to get rid of the Imani workers," he said. David outlined the plans an NDC Government has for the Imani programme.

He said a Congress government will upgrade the Imani programme "to give the young people real jobs." David gave his party assurance of ensuring that the young people are provided with relevant jobs.

"What they (NNP) have been doing is using the Imani programme as a political football. What they have been doing is trying to indoctrinate the Imani youth with their NNP propaganda", he said.

"That is not what we will do... We will ensure that the young people who are in the programme do find proper jobs, and that the programme is strengthened to afford them the real possibility of progress," he added.

David told the crowd that a new beginning is in sight "because we are on the verge of becoming the new government".
