Attorney at law, Dr. Francis Alexis, has given the Grenadian Voice until August 18 to to render a full, complete, and unequivocal written public retraction of an allegation made in a July 26, 2008
publication affecting Catholic Bishop, Vincent Darius.
The newly appointed Queen's Counsel has written to Editor of the Grenaidan Voice newspaper, Leslie Pierre seeking redress regarding libel committed in an article titled "The behaviour of His Lordship" in the column, "Personally Speaking."
The article claims that, from his pulpit, Bishop Darius urged his congregation to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Tillman Thomas in preference to the then governing New National Party (NNP) of ousted Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell.
In his letter, Dr. Alexis pointed out that all those allegations are false, were maliciously written and published, and constitute a very serious libel on His Lordship Bishop Darius.
The letter is requesting an apology to Bishop Darius in terms to be approved by Dr. Alexis.
Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that Pierre might have gotten his facts wrong since the Bishop is not known to have make any public statements during the campaign for the July 8 poll that can be considered to be partisan in nature.
A source close to the Catholic Church confided that the Catholic Priest at Grand Anse made certain statements in his weekly sermons which could have been considered as castigating the NNP regime.
"I don't think that Mr. Pierre got it right this time. The Bishop was not involved in anything of the sort. Yes, some people in the church might have said some of the things that Pierre said in his column but not the Bishop at all", he remarked.
