Humphrey, the current President-General of the Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU), defied the odds and defeated the President of the Public Workers Union (PWU), Madonna Harford 9-5 in a vote for the nomination.
Humphrey who has been in the senate since the early 90's has reportedly told fellow colleagues that he would not be seeking another term in Parliament.
His re-election comes on the heels of the decision taken by the farming community last week to return Keith Clouden as their representative in the Senate.
Speculation is rife that Christopher De Allie, General Manager of Sissons Paints (G'da) Ltd is due to taker over from Aaron Moses as the new private sector representative in the Senate.
And former Education Minister, George Mc Guire is tipped to be the new Speaker of the House of Representative.
He will be taking over from Lawrence Joseph, who was given the post by the previous Mitchell government.
Mc Guire who served as a government minister in the 1984-990 period served briefly as Speaker of the House in 2003.
Meanwhile, another ex-government minister, Joan Purcell is tipped to land the prestigious position of President of the Senate and Acting Governor General.
