The Parliamentary Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is happy over the success of its North American tour that took in stops in New York and Toronto in Canada.
Opposition Leader and Political Leader of the NDC, Tillman Thomas was at the head of a five-member delegation that returned home on Tuesday afternoon after a one-week trip to meet with Grenadians in the two big cities.
The other members of the team were, Deputy Political Leader, Sen. George Prime, General Secretary, Peter David, Public Relations Officer, Nazim Burke and Sen. Ingrid Rush.
Speaking to reporters on arrival at the Point Salines International Airport (PSIA), Thomas described the trip as being very successful.
The NDC boss measured the success of the trip in terms of the launching of its first party support group in Toronto, Canada, and the turn-out of Grenadians at both public meetings.
An estimated 400-450 persons turned up in Brooklyn on Sunday night for the NDC meeting while the Toronto gathering was put at 250 persons.
According to Thomas, the meetings were well attended and brought out the issues affecting Grenada with the crowd being very receptive and enthusiastic about the issues that were brought out to their attention.
He said the people were very positive at both meetings in Toronto and New York, asking quite a lot of questions about their homeland.
The NDC is trying to replace Keith Mitchell's ruling New National Party
(NNP) that has been affected by a stream of scandals in recent years including bribery pay-offs to government officials by the collapsed First International Bank of Grenada (FIBG), and an alleged US$500, 000.00 payment to the Prime Minister from a jailed con-man for a diplomatic position.
The regime has also been affected by bribery allegations against deputy prime minister, Gregory Bowen and the virtual give-away of its oil and gas marine resources to U.S oilman, Jack Grynberg.
Thomas said that Grenadians living in North America were quite surprised about some of the problems taking place in the land of their birth with regards to good governance.
"As you know, our platform is really good governance for Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, and we have been outlining the decay in our institutions in Grenada, from the Office of the Governor General right down," he told reporters.
Thomas spoke of the North American diaspora as being integral to Grenada's future development.
He said that they have been contributing substantially towards the develop of their homeland materially and technically over the years.
He pointed out that the trip was also used to share the vision the Congress Party has for the development of Grenada if it wins the next general elections due within the next 14 months.
"We outlined our position on the different areas, agriculture, health... So basically we shared our vision with them for the development of Grenada, and we are quite happy with this trip," Thomas said.
The NDC Political Leader said that assurances were given by the delegation to keep the North American diaspora abreast of developments in their homeland as general elections draw near.
