It's been more than two years since seven year old Brian John of Calliste, St. George's was killed by a speeding vehicle driven by Valerie Brewster, but for the family of this youngster, justice is yet to come their way.

A still grieving father,  Bernard Beggs visited Grenada Today on Monday to voice his concern over the completion of the case without being notified of it by the court.

According to John, he attended the February assizes of the high Court to get information on when the matter was going to be heard by the judge but was informed by an officer attached to the court that it was not listed and that he will be notified accordingly.

He said he was not informed and took it upon himself to inquire at the Supreme Court Registry, only to be told, "Sorry mister, the case is already heard."

He spoke of being told that Brewster pleaded guilty to the charge laid against her was fined $2500 to be paid on or before May 1 or serve nine months in prison and that her license was revoked for a period of five years. Beggs said it is rather alarming to know that his son's case was called before the court in the absence of both parents who are still alive and could be reached easily in Grenada.
The father has retained attorney-at-law, Anslem Clouden to seek legal recourse in the matter.

He said that Clouden sent him to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where he was informed that the reason he was not notified of the date for hearing is due to the fact that the lady pleaded guilty.

Speculation is rife that Clouden would be instituting private legal action against Brewster on behalf of Beggs. When contacted, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions,  Darshan Ramdhani told GRENADA TODAY that the defendant pleaded guilty to Reckless Driving and that the matter was heard on March 14.

He said that the father's name was not listed as a witness for the case and as such it was not the duty of the DPP's office to notify him about the matter. Ramdhani said that from the evidence gathered it is clear that the deceased was playing in the road and may have caused his own death.

Beggs stated that he intends to pursue legal proceedings against Brewster in the hope that he will get much needed justice for his son whom he always remembered as filled with potential and having a deep love for church and school.

At the time of the accident, Brewster was said to be heading  towards the Point Salines International Airport (PSIA). After colliding with the seven year old, she reportedly lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road and in the process hitting two animals before slamming into a private property.

The deceased was a Grade Three student of Calliste Government School.
