Sen. Ann David Antoine |
Further signs are emerging that Grenada's ruling New National Party (NNP) is gearing up for the next general elections.
GRENADA TODAY has obtained the copy of a letter sent by Health Minister, Ann David-Antoine to residents in the well-to-do area of Lance aux Epines in the South St. George constituency appealing to them to get registered to vote for the upcoming general elections.
Antoine is expected to contest the seat for the NNP which is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in office.
The current holder of the seat is Glynnis Roberts of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who defeated the Health Minister in the 2003 poll.
In the letter dated, April 18, Minister David-Antoine is appealing on the well to-do residents to put themselves in a position to vote in order to maintain the peace and stability that has been enjoyed over the past fifteen years.
The cash-strapped administration of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has been attempting to woo the electorate on allegations that the Congress party intends to bring the island back to the days of the ill-fated 1979-83 Grenada Revolution.
General elections are constitutionally due within the next 18 months.
Following is the full text of the letter on Voter Registration from Minister David-Antoine:
Dear Resident:
I am writing to advise that the voter registration office for residents of the constituency of South St. George has just been opened and is located in Belmont close to the Lexus Inn.
The building is painted blue and the sign reads, South St. George Parliamentary Elections Office. The office operates from 8:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m Monday to Friday. If you have not registered as yet, I would strongly urge you to do so as soon as possible.
Our research into the voting patterns of the residents of Lance Aux Epines indicate that a significant number of the residents do not bother to vote on Election Day.
In order to maintain the peace and stability that has been enjoyed over the past fifteen years, it is imperative that everyone eligible to vote in the next election does so.
Indeed, the economic and social gains the country has made and we have all grown accustomed to over the years could be threatened if you do not exercise your right to vote next time.
I therefore appeal to you to register now and make a conscious decision to vote when the time comes.
As you would have probably heard by now, Prime Minister Mitchell and I recently met with some residents of Lance Aux Epines at an open meeting on the playing field.
We took the opportunity to bring those attending up to date on issues relating to the development of South St. George and Lance Aux Epines in particular.
We also listened to the concerns raised and agreed to follow-up on some of them. Another meeting is being planned and you will be advised about the details.
In the meantime, I urge you to visit the voter registration office soon and register. Your vote could make a difference in the future between continued stability and economic uncertainty.
Yours truly
Sen. The Hon. Ann David-Antoine
Minster for Health
