Former school teacher, Delma Charles is due to make her first major public appearance Sunday on a platform with the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.
Charles has quit her post at the La Fillette Government School to take up a political appointment in the Ministry of Youth Affairs in anticipation of contesting the upcoming general elections for the party.
According to well-placed sources, the former school teacher will be one of the speakers at a major public meeting to be held at Progress Park in St. Andrew's.
Charles is tipped to contest the rural St. Andrew North-west seat held by Alleyne Walker of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Her assignment on Sunday is another clear indication that the NNP favours Charles contesting the seat rather than early front-runner, Starlin Romain.
Another possible contender for the seat is former Education Minister, Laurina Waldron who lost the constituency to Walker in the 2003 poll.
Apart from Charles, the other speakers on the platform will include Prime Minister Mitchell, Deputy Prime Minister, Gregory Bowen, General Secretary, Clarice Charles and the three other top contenders for the remaining seats in St. Andrew's - Social Development Minister, Yolande Bain-Horsford (St. Andrew South-west), Sports Minister Roland Bhola (St. Andrew North-east) and Youth Affairs Minister, Senator Emmalin Pierre (St. Andrew South-east.
The party's newly appointed Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ronald Straker disclosed that Prime Minister Mitchell intends to make a"major announcement" at Sunday's meeting.
This promoted political observers to speculate that the Grenadian might release the date for the next general elections or announce a reshuffle of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Reports spread that Caricom Ambassador, Dr. Patrick Antoine could be appointed as a Senator in place of former Sports Minister, Adrian"Spaceman" Mitchell to replace Finance Minister, Anthony Boatswain at the Finance desk.
Antoine's name also surfaced as a possible candidate for the NNP in the St. George North-east seat to combat attorney-at-law, Nazim Burke of the Congress Party.
Dr. Antoine has reportedly denied that he would be accepting a ministerial portfolio and entering frontline politics.
General elections are constitutionally due in Grenada late next year.
