Kopycinski joined the University as Business Administrator in 1983 and even in the face of his declining health, provided strong leadership until his demise. He was responsible for a staff which now numbers over 500 and managed the University's business during turbulent times and enormous growth.
As President of the Grenada Heart Foundation (GHF), Kopycinski along with his wife Rosemary led the organisation, which was formed in 1984 and which to date has given 190 children a second chance at life.
Additionally, the Heart Foundation successfully collaborated with WINDREF and the Ministry of Health to reduce the incidence of rheumatic fever in Grenada.
In recognition of the role of GHF in improving health, the Chancellor of St. George's University, Dr. Charles Modica recently presented a Community Service Award to the Foundation.
The award was presented as part of the 30th Anniversary Kick-Off events and is testament to the dedication, hard work, and sacrifices that John and his wife made.
Kopycinski was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Grenada and an advocate for persons with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups.
He also served as a board member of the Fund for Orphans and Elderly, an organisation which has raised over 1.5 million dollars for orphans and the elderly in our community.
He was well known and respected and will be missed by his associates and friends.
