EVERYBODY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING - CD NOW AVAILABLE

EDITORIAL

There is never a dull political moment in Grenada. And the level of political excitement has risen since Dr. Keith Mitchell and the New National Party (NNP) took office in 1995.

The ruling party has demonstrated its creativity in this respect. This creative ability has been observed quite frequently in the recent weeks.

Underlying this creativity is the inherent political sensitivity that seems to permeate all NNP's actions.

Every word uttered and every action pursued is politically calculated. It is as if it is paranoia driven.

The latest manifestation of this surrounds the recent progress at the stadium as the Chinese are administering the painting finishes.

The color chosen by our new friends from the Mainland have resulted in many persons on the island jokingly stating that the Chinese are building a stadium for the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

As such, NNP's top brass are having anxiety attacks over the colour scheme.

The primary colour is neither yellow or gold, but they are having fits due to their infection of a "colour blind disease".

Ask any civil servant about the hostile reaction they receive in the Ministerial complex at the Botanical Gardens if they make the mistake and wear anything yellow like a dress, top or skirt.

Can you believe this color madness of the NNP regime? Thank God it is the Chinese who are building a real stadium and not "Imbert." Thank God it is money from Beijing.

Could you imagine the Chinese having to rebuild scaffolding and repaint the entire stadium to satisfy the crazy illusions of the paranoid. Just how foolish have we become.

Politics have now diminished us to concerns, sensitivities and fears of the colour yellow, gold and green. Maybe at this rate, NNP will soon get upset about Grenadians drinking orange or passion fruit juice and eating oildown given their colour.

The recent billboard creation and its rationale are also symptomatic of the existing paranoia pervading the modus operandi of the current NNP administration.

Minister Einstein Louison was quite honest and candid in his utterances. One hopes that he was not speaking out of turn and that he was not severely chided.

He clearly stated that the reason for the bill boards is because of NNP's feeling that the public perception of them and their performance was negative.

When one adds to this the billboard's slogan that they are the only government that can be trusted, it is clear that it is serving a political goal.

This creation is patently political. Any attempt to suggest otherwise is comical. Further to compare this with the actions of other governments is also misleading.

The People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) for example used quite a lot of billboards. However, they were projecting national themes and a particular philosophy. Not the projection of a blatant political party, and with the use of State funds to boot.

What about the timing and cost of this action? Can such an adventure be justified against the scarcity of funds and the existence of tarpaulin on some houses?

This newspaper strongly believe that the critics have already exposed the insensitivity and lack of prudence of this act. But what is even worse the NNP arrogantly boasts that they will erect more in every parish with our taxpayers money . All in a possible futile attempt to change perceptions.

Perceptions they spent the last eleven years cultivating.

Then of course, we have the incredible creation of State intervention in the cement issue. Intervention to support a bad private investment decision, possible inefficiencies and incompetence. For whose benefit? This issue has left more questions than answers.

Now the Port Louis project and squatting is also timely. The lack of information on this project and the increasing purchase of land by non Grenadians is generating some disquiet in the society.

One wonders what creation is next by the NNP in its attempts to "bounce back" politically after its near defeat in the 2003 poll.

The fact remains that there is never a dull moment in political life of Grenada.

And the excitement continues compliments the NNP and its maximum leader, Keith Mitchell.
