A number of activities and events have been scheduled by The Maurice Bishop And October Martyrs Foundation to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the collapse of the ill-fated 1979 Revolution.
These activities include the unveiling of a street sign on the Maurice Bishop highway which was named after the slain leader several years ago. This activity will take place on Thursday 19th October 2006 at the Republic Bank Roundabout at 7.00 a.m.
Interested persons who would like to be present for the unveiling should be there before 7.00 a.m.Later that day there will be a prayer vigil at Fort George, the site where Bishop and others were brutally massacred 23 years ago.
This vigil will begin at 12.00 noon and all interested people are invited to participate.A little later around 3.30 p.m, the official annual commemorative event celebrating the lives and times of Maurice Bishop and the October Martyrs will begin.
The public is cordially invited to participate in the celebration of those who gave their lives at Fort Rupert (George) that fateful day 23 years ago.Although the Foundation is grateful that a street has been named in honour of Bishop, it would like to register its desire to see the Point Salines International Airport being renamed the Maurice Bishop International Airport.
Additionally, 23 years have passed since the disappearance of the remains of Prime Minister Bishop and others who died at Forge Rupert.
We are once more making an appeal to the authorities to undertake a comprehensive investigation that would lead to the recovery of the remains or alternatively recollect whatever information is available that would clarify once and for all what happened to the remains and whether or not it would ever be possible to recover them.
We also call for recognition of the valiant soldiers who gave their lives in the defense of their country and that a proper monument be erected in their honour at their grave site at the St. George's cemetery.
The patriotism and bravery they displayed in the face of overwhelming odds should not be forgotten or go unnoticed.
Finally, the Maurice Bishop and the October Martyrs Foundation in its effort to revive the foundation and make it the vibrant organisation that it once was call on all supporters and well-wishers to join with us to rebuild it once again so that we can continue as we have done in the past to preserve the image and memories of all of those slain in October 1983, to provide scholarships to needy students and to undertake projects in the name of our fallen heroes who gave their lives for the cause of the Grenadian people.
