A
leading St. Patrick's businessman, Dr. Angus Friday is tipped
to become the island's new Permanent Representative to the United
Nations.
Well-placed sources told GRENADA TODAY that Dr. Friday is more
than likely to replace the current holder of the post Ambassador
Ruth Rouse who is expected to be recalled home shortly by the
Keith Mitchell-led New National Party (NNP) government.
When contacted for comment on the issue, the Sauteurs businessman
who is associated with the GLENELG Natural Spring Water business
said: "No one has informed me of that".
The impending appointment was fueled by reports that Dr. Friday
was part of the Grenada delegation that was in New York last month
to witness the address to the U.N General Assembly by Foreign
Affairs Minister, Elvin Nimrod.
A close cousin of Dr. Friday, medical doctor Trevor Friday has
already been approached by Prime Minister Mitchell to contest
the rural St. Patrick East seat for the ruling party in the next
general election.
The Fridays' have close ties with St. Patrick's - the father of
Dr. Trevor Friday, the late Dr. Wellington Friday being the elected
representative for St. Patrick West in the early 1970's with the
defunct Grenada National Party (GNP) before deflecting to join
the ranks of the governing Grenada United Labour Party (GULP).
The GLENELG boss admitted that he attended the U.N session with
Minister Nimrod but stopped short of admitting that he was part
of the official Grenada delegation. He said that he had travelled
to New York on his own and while there was issued the invitation
to attend the U.N General Assembly session.
"This (going to the U.N) was something that happened at
the very last minute", he remarked. Dr. Friday did not
categorically deny that if the post of U.N Ambassador for Grenada
was offered to him that he would decline the diplomatic post.
He said: "I run a company. I would have to give it a lot
of consideration. It is certainly something that I would have
to discuss with my family and fiancee and a number of people".
"Right now, I am in the middle of a major expansion plan
at Glenelg. That is my main focus right now. If something like
that comes up to me.... I would have to give it a lot of consideration
given what is going on right now", he added.
Dr. Friday is also involved with a financial grouping that has
been trying to attract funds to Grenada for investment opportunities
in a number of small to medium size businesses.
