The Grenada
Red Cross got started in 1955 as a result of disaster and damages
from Hurricane Janet.
A central
committee was formed then to help the victims of the disaster.
In 1956, the size of this committee was increased to include
representatives from each parish.
Today,
Grenada Red Cross is delighted to celebrate 50 years and is
committed to continue in its general object to prevent and alleviate
suffering with complete impartiality, making no discrimination
as to nationality, race, sex, religious beliefs, class or political
opinions.
This year,
May 8 2006, our celebration took the form of a rally, under
the theme "UNIVERSAL ASSISTANCE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING".
There was a huge turnout from the various Red Cross Youth and
also from the adult Red Cross Community Groups throughout the
island.
The rally
started with a massive gathering at the Cuthbert Peters Park,
Gouyave, St. John's, followed by a parade through the streets
of Gouyave which was concluded with an official ceremony at
the Mt. Rose Modern Secondary School. There
were over 200 representatives among the various Schools and
Adult groups.
The Joint
Message from the IFRC AND ICRC president was read by Marjorie
Strachan, (Vice President) and one of the Longest Serving Red
Cross members. President, Pastor Christopher Williams, reflected
on his twenty years (20) of service to Grenada Red Cross Society
and thanked the volunteers for their continued service to humanity,
especially after the passage of Hurricane Ivan and Emily.
The feature
address was delivered by Dynia Belfon, of Clozier, St John's,
who applauded the Grenada Red Cross for the involvement of Youth
and the spirit of volunteerism. She also reminded those present
that one of the best things that any individual can give to
society is that of volunteering without expecting any monetary
reward. ³There is satisfaction in volunteering², she
said.
As we celebrate,
the Grenada Red Cross would like to express thanks to all our
volunteers and those who have contributed to the ongoing success
of our society. The Opening of the local Red Cross Building
would be on May 30th 2006 at the compound.
