There was panic Monday in the Upper Section of the Ministerial Complex at the Botanical Gardens as a firearm belonging to a member of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) went off sending workers running in all directions for cover.

Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that the incident occurred after the weekly Cabinet meeting with the firearm going off inside the office of a Secretary in the Prime Minister"s ministry.

According to a well-placed official, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Keith Mitchell had already left the building when the firearm was discharged. "It happened about 15 minutes after the P.M had left the place", he remarked.

The source said that the .38 service revolver apparently fell from the hands of the Police Officer on guard and as soon as it hit the ground it went off. "I was up there (in the building) when the firearm went off. It made a big loud bang", he added.

The official pointed out that the secretary could have been badly wounded if she had ventured into the vicinity of where the firearm had fallen from the officer. Government has not issued any official bulletin on the incident.
