She
is a flag bearer for the main opposition National Democratic
Congress and a nemesis for the ruling New National Party (NNP)
government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.
Small businesswoman,
Carmiel Theresa Scott operates from "The White House"
near to the old Ministry of Education Building, just in front
Sendall Tunnel in St. George's. She is now waging her own battle
with the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) in the Ministry of Finance
that is trying to demolish her small building.
Carmiel
as she is called by everyone was thrown into a fit of anger
on Wednesday as her "bread and butter" were being
threatened by officers of the NNP regime. Special Services Unit
(SSU) officers of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), Grenada
Electricity Services Ltd workmen accompanied PPU personnel to
demolish the structure.
The move
reportedly came just one day after Carmiel received an eviction
letter which informed her that she had to move immediately.
According to the small business woman, she was approached by
two of the Officers (her customers) and asked her if she had
anywhere to put her things.
She said
that she told them no and that she was waiting on officers from
Physical Planning to see if they had found a place to put her
since she has nowhere to go. "I am not going to take my
things out as long as they don't give me somewhere to go. This
is what I am doing (selling from The White House) to take care
of my children and my bills.

"I
am a hard worker, for years I've been in this little corner
...since before the revolution. The revolution met me here and
left me here. "I went to America and I came back and set
up me little business here, you understand. I paying tax here,
I have me loan to pay for, I have me children to take care of
so I can't see how the Government just want to lick me down
just so".
Carmiel
stressed that the Physical Planning officers were expected to
sit with her and discuss the situation and to be given a notice
allowing her adequate time to relocate. She felt that if this
was done and that within a period of three to six month after
receiving the notice and she failed to move then they had the
right to smash the property.
"This
is the first time I ever see this....you just want to push down
somebody just so. It's unfair to me...I am a Grenadian by birth...and
I ain't going nowhere!" The small vendor pointed out that
when the letter was presented to her by PPU officers she was
told that government was trying to beautify around the town
for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Carmiel was adamant that unless the relevant authorities do
not get somewhere nice and decent to put her, she will remain
in "The White House".
Within
the immediate vicinity in which the female NDC activist conducts
her business is another small business. Well-placed sources
told this newspaper that the operator of the business who is
a suspected government sympathiser did not receive a similar
eviction notice like Carmiel.
The small
business woman warned that if the Mitchell government decides
to destroy her place she will consider legal actions against
them since her business is registered and her tax has been paid
for 2006.
Parliamentary
Representative for the Town of St George, Peter David was on
the scene lending his support to Carmiel who is known to be
one of his strongest supporters in the city. David strongly
condemned the actions taken by the Mitchell-led Government to
destroy the property of Carmiel.
He called
on all Grenadians to protest against the action contemplated
against the small business woman, noting that this is not about
Carmiel but rather about ordinary Grenadians who are striving
for a better living.
"All
Grenadians should do all that they can to support Ms Scott because
by supporting Ms Scott we're supporting all Grenadians fighting
for a better living", he told reporters.. David charged
that many people in the country thought that the NNP was a government
for the working people and was going to look after the interest
of working people, but unfortunately it appears that the regime
is intent on keeping all poor people poor.
According
to the city M.P, all he wants is for government to show some
courtesy to Carmiel who has rights like any other Grenadian.
"Give her notice, find a place where she can go to make
her living and take care of her children", he quipped.
David said
that the small vendor is a Grenadian and should be treated as
such with due respect and dignity.
