The
three Trinidadian ATM robbers responsible for defrauding locals
and visitors of thousands of dollars have been sentenced to three
years each at the Richmond Hill Prison.
The trio - 49-year old Kelvin Snagg, 44-year old Derek Maloney,
and 23-year old Kristol Pereira - were sentenced on Wednesday
by Chief Magistrate Patricia Mark.
Last Thursday, the trinis made their third court appearance before
the Chief Magistrate and pleaded guilty to six of the 11 charges
laid against them. The ATM robbers were apprehended by members
of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) with the assistance of
the local banks following investigations into a number of withdrawals
from Automated Teller Machines.
The lawmen recovered thousands of dollars that the suspects allegedly
managed to withdraw from some machines, including $18,000.00 from
an account belonging to a German couple.
The trini con-artists arrived in the country on April 7 and within
two days of their stay had allegedly tampered with ATM machines
in both St. George's and Grand Anse.
It
is believed that the suspects used what is known as the Lebanese
Loop, an illegal device inserted into the card reader that captures
the card, which the fraudster later retrieves, after offering
to assist the affected customer and getting him/her to reveal
their PIN.
Pereira was represented by Attorney-at-Law Peter David while Snagg
and Maloney were represented by Barrister-at-law, Cajeton Hood.
