The Media
Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) notes with grave concern
and alarm the taking into custody of the Editor of the Grenada
Today, Mr. George Worme by the Royal Grenada Police Force for
questioning on March 14th, 2006 for a letter to the Editor published
on February 17, 2006, entitles "Shameful and Disgraceful
Grand Mother".
The letter
was in reaction to the involvement of the MP’s mother-in-law
with the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister
Dr. Keith Mitchell to bring a case against him in court on his
right to be elected to Parliament while holding Canadian citizenship.
The Media
Workers Association of Grenada considers the action by the Police
as intended to intimidate the Editor of the Grenada Today and
Media Workers in country.
MWAG strongly
believes that if the article aggrieved anyone he or she could
have taken the matter to the Civil Courts and have the justice.
The decision of the Police to peruse the matter under criminal
libel is unwarranted and seemed designed to pressure the media.
MWAG notes
that it is not the first time the Police and Government have used
the power of the state to intimidate journalists - we recalled
two years ago the threat by the GIS to use the full force of the
law if the journalists were to report on the "SO CALLED BRIEFCASE
STORY INVOLVING THE PRIME MINISTER."
MWAG wishes
to condemn this latest action by the Police.
