The
latest arrest of the editor of the GRENADA TODAY newspaper is another
case of “different strokes for different folks”.
It is becoming clearer each and every passing day that certain elements
within the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) are being used by the
current political directorate to try and clobber their perceived
enemies.
And these officers who are there at the beckoning of the New National
Party (NNP) can be counted and relied upon, as well as trusted to
thwart police investigations into complaints made against government
officials.
The case of former Leader of the Opposition, Michael Baptiste is
a classic reminder of the manner in which the Police Force is used
by those now in charge of the affairs of the State.
About two years ago, Mr. Baptiste visited the Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) and complained to the then Head, Superintendent
Charles now an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Inspector
Earl Dunbar that he was criminally libelled by Foreign Affairs Minister,
Elvin Nimrod at a press conference in 2004 about a fraud-related
charge brought against him by government.
Mr. Baptiste has not heard one single word in the past two years
from either ACP Charles or Insp. Dunbar about his complaint. The
former Opposition Leader visited Police headquarters on Tuesday
morning to meet with Police Commissioner, Winston James to ask him
for an update on what the police is doing about the matter involving
Minister Nimrod.
The Commissioner asked Mr. Baptiste to give him the name of the
officer that he made the complaint to and he (Baptiste) mentioned
Insp. Dunbar and pointed in the direction of ACP Charles who was
also sitting in at the meeting.
When the Commissioner asked his colleague officer about the issue,
ACP Charles replied: “Insp. Dunbar is handling the case”.
Imagine two years have passed and Insp. Dunbar, ACP Charles and
company cannot get back to the former Opposition Leader and update
him on his complaint about criminal libel made against a senior
member of the Keith Mitchell government.
This can be contrasted to the speed in which the police got into
action once more against the Editor of GRENADA TODAY on the urging
of the government legal hit man following a complaint made by a
woman who is known to be bitter with her son-in-law, Peter David
who decided to live a separate life from her daughter, Antonia.
It is no secret that the woman (Clythe Redhead) is part of the NNP
set-up to try and take away the Town of St. George constituency
from Mr. David for reasons best known to her and try and hand it
on a silver platter to Tourism Minister, Brenda Hood.
It is rather unfortunate that the character of some people will
have to come up for scrutiny in the current battle being waged by
the legal hitman of the NNP and the Sauteurs woman against the editor
of GRENADA TODAY.
There is a saying that if you live in Glass houses do not throw
stones and show me a man who has not sinned. The people of Grenada
are already talking and talking loud about those with very long
and questionable track records who are trying to destroy people
for the NNP.
These people might have to face up to serious questions in open
court about running away from Grenada and making children for men
other than their husbands and then sending back home pictures of
the children to show to their legal husbands. There
are many more questions that these people will be asked at the right
time.
Will the Legal Hitman of the NNP from the wild ,wild west be in
the court to protect them from the onslaught? This newspaper is
confident that Peter David if called upon in court will be willing
to explain the New York connection in 1979 between himself, Clythe’s
daughter (Antonia) and Adrian “Spaceman” Mitchell, the
current NNP Minister of Agriculture.
This could help explain to the Grenadian public the bitterness of
some people on the NNP side to the newlook team in the NDC involving
Peter David and Company.
If anyone in this country doubts the thinking of the NNP and the
party’s penchant for interfering with the police and legal
process then ask two former government ministers - Mr. Baptiste
and Dr. Raphael Fletcher.
Very soon the Editor of this newspaper will seek an audience with
the Commissioner of Police to bring to his attention for criminal
libel investigation certain statements made against him in another
local newspaper by an official of the NNP.
Let’s hope that the laws of criminal libel is for all Grenadians
and not only used by those now occupying the seat of power to intimidate
their perceived opponents.
It must not simple be a case of ‘different strokes for different
folks’.
