PLM Boss Dr. Francis "Work House" Alexis
The People's Labour Movement (PLM) is not happy with the decision of its Deputy Political Leader, Kenny Lalsingh to join forces with the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

Lalsingh, a businessman by profession, has been identified by the Grenadian leader as the replacement for retiring President of the Senate, Leslie-ann Seon.

A party official told GRENADA TODAY that as far as the PLM is concerned Lalsingh, a defeated candidate in the last general elections, is no longer considered as a member of the movement that is headed by former Attorney-General, Dr. Francis Alexis.

“We have virtually dismissed him”, said a senior party official who did not want to be identified. In a brief statement issued, the party said: “The People's Labour Movement (PLM) has heard that Mr. Kenny Lalsingh has accepted the offer to become an NNP Senator.

“The People's Labour Movement is grateful (for) the help afforded by Mr. Lalsingh over the years. The PLM wishes Mr. Lalsingh the best in his future endeavours”, it added. The Lalsingh move has not surprised many political pundits in the country.

A few months ago, Lalsingh travelled in the capacity as a business leader to Mainland China with Prime Minister Mitchell. He also accompanied the Grenadian leader to a meeting in Trinidad and Tobago as part of his delegation to discuss oil and gas matters.

Speculation is rife that the NNP hierarchy might give some consideration to Lalsingh as a possible candidate if Finance Minister Anthony Boatswain decides not to seek re-election in the next general election in the St. Patrick West constituency. Both Lalsingh and Dr. Mitchell are original members of the New National Party (NNP) that was formed in 1984 in the aftermath of the U.S-led military intervention that brought an end to Grenada’s brief flirtation with leftwing revolution under the New Jewel movement (NJM) of late Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop.

Lalsingh first served as a Junior Minister for Works but was forced out of office following a complaint made against him by Dr. Mitchell who headed the ministry. Dr. Mitchell alleged that Lalsingh was involved in a cement scandal in his St. Patrick’s West seat forcing then Prime Minister Herbert Blaize to sack him as a Junior Minister.

Both Lalsingh and Dr. Mitchell are known to be bitterly opposed to the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Tillman Thomas.
