Political
Leader of the People’s Labour Movement (PLM), Dr Francis
Alexis says that there is no future within the party for his deputy,
Kenny Lalsingh who is the newly appointed President of the Senate.
Alexis told
reporters Tuesday at a press conference that PLM was never consulted
on the appointment by anyone including Lalsingh himself. The PLM
Deputy Political Leader has accepted an invitation extended to
him by Prime Minister and Political Leader of the governing New
National Party (NNP), Dr. Keith Mitchell to replace barrister-at-law,
Leslie-Ann Seon to preside over the Senate.
Dr. Alexis
stated that he had no previous knowledge of this development involving
Lalsingh and was only made aware of it when it was reported in
the local media on Monday. He acknowledged that Lalsingh, a businessman
y profession, has not been functioning with the PLM since he returned
to the island from Mainland China as part of a delegation headed
by Prime Minister Mitchell.
“Since
he (Lalsingh) came back from China he has gone missing”,
Dr. Alexis said while adding that, “apparently that slow
boat which took him to China never brought him back”. The
PLM boss admitted that relations with Lalsingh and the party had
deteriorated in recent weeks.
According
to Dr. Alexis, his deputy had expressed concerns about the current
state of the party and called for a special session to look at
things but when the members assembled he never showed up himself.
He made it clear that Lalsingh cannot go into the Senate and pretend
to be representing PLM in any way.
He said the
decent thing for Lalsingh to have done was resign as Deputy Political
Leader from the party months ago. Alexis pointed out that Lalsingh
has now pledged his loyalty to Mitchell’s NNP and as such
cannot continue to function as PLM’s Deputy Political Leader.
Lalsingh
was a foundation member of the NNP when it was formed in 1984
but broke ranks with the party to join Alexis and former Prime
Minister George Brizan to form the National Democratic Congress
(NDC) in 1987.
