The lives of three children ended in horror on Friday night as fire engulfed their home in Glebelan, Sauteurs. Dead are Akida, 12, a student of Mc Donald College, five year old Shariya, a student of St Patrick¹s Anglican School, and Shermaya Oliver who was only 2 years old.

Akida

Information reaching our News Desk indicate that the children were left at home by their mother who travelled to Gouyave to attend the weekly Fish Friday festival.

The fire reportedly started at approximately 11:30 p.m. As word spread throughout the community, a crowd of curious onlookers gathered near to the home while several others assisted in trying to extinguish the fire. The house is located next to the Sauteurs Police Station.

The children were already dead they were found inside the house. Speculation is rife that they died as a result of suffocation. Eyewitness reported hearing a loud explosion on a utility pole outside the house prior to the start of the fire.

When contacted on Wednesday, two senior employees of the Grenada Electricity Company (GRENLEC) said that the utility is not aware of any such thing happening on its pole near to the burnt house.

Grandmother to the three children, Delma Oliver when contacted on Monday by GRENADA TODAY said that she is trying her best to cope with the lost of her "loving" grandchildren.

Shariya

Oliver said that several neighbours in the area told her that they had seen the pole close to the burnt home sparking before during the house was engulfed in flames.

According to the grandmother, her daughter Vondell Oliver, the mother of the three children, was invited by a friend to attend the popular Fish Friday event. She said it was not the norm for the daughter to leave her children unattended at home.

She added that Vondell did not plan to go anywhere for the night since she was already dressed for bed. However, she had never attended the event and when the invitation was extended to her she decided to go and see the festival for the very first time.

A distraught Vondell has decided not to speak to the press on the incident in which she lost her three loved ones.

Shermaya

There are reports that the father of the 12-year old had made plans to send his daughter to the United States for the summer holiday.

The little girl is said to have just gotten her entry visa in Barbados for the trip to New York.
