St. Maarten:
A Grenadian
woman is facing possible murder charges in St Maarten following
the death of her Grenadian husband last week Friday.
According to an article published
by the Daily Herald police officials received a call about a domestic
dispute at Mount William Hill around 9:50 p.m, however when the
lawmen arrived on the scene they found Michael Derek Calliste (47)
of Grenada suffering from a stab wound to his chest. He later succumbed
to the injuries and died before he arrived at St Maarten Medical
Center.
Calliste's death is believed to be linked to a long-standing
abusive relationship and police have detained a woman who is said
to be the deceased's reputed wife.
The Daily Herald reported that while there was no official word
from St Maarten authorities about Friday's fatal stabbing
up to press time, the couple's teenage son told the newspaper
that the police had had cause to visit the couple's Dutch
Quarter residence in the past because of a violent domestic dispute.
He also reported that police had taken his mother to Safe Haven,
the local shelter for battered women, for her own safety on a previous
occasion.
The 14-year-old St Maarten Academy student, who said he could
no longerattend school because his residence papers had not been
processed, blames himself for his father's death.
He said that Friday night's
argument stemmed from his failure to purchase groceries after earning
some money at the mechanic shop where his father worked for years. "Every
time I make some money they argue, he explained.
He said his father and mother had quarrelled over the matter
and there had been an altercation during which his mother had been
hit in the face.
"I was telling my mother not to raise her voice with my
father and to take it easy and my father wanted to hit me, said
the distraught son.
He said he had tried to help, his father had grown even angrier
and hit his mother again, and she had drawn a knife and stabbed
him in the chest.
He is now concerned that he has to fend not only for himself,
but for his two younger sisters and a five year-old brother all
children of his mother and father.
Deputy Chief Police Commissioner
Richard Panneflek confirmed Calliste's death around 11:00
p.m. and said the woman responsible for the stabbing had been detained
by patrol officers, the newspaper reported.
