The main
Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed
grave concern over the pace at which the Caribbean Single Market
and Economy (CSME) drive is taking place both at home and abroad.
During
a press conference held last week Wednesday, the Congress party
promised to lend its support to CSME, but is concerned about
legislation tabled for passage in parliament on Tuesday.
NDC's
Deputy Political Leader George Prime described the CSME as a
very important step for small developing countries like Grenada,
and the opposition is on board, but that not enough is being
done to sensitise the public on what the CSME is and its implications.
"We
make no bones about being on board, but we make bones of the
fact (that) when an important piece of legislation like this,
which touch and concern the lives of all of us, not some, all
of CaricomŠ I believe it will be fair to say very little
is known about this piece of legislation, let alone what Caricom
is about in Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique," he
said.
The concerns
of the Congress party on the issue was also touched by its General
Secretary and Parliamentary Representative for the town of St
George, Peter David.
According
to David, the opposition M.P's only received a copy of
the legislation last week Tuesday and as such, this does not
give members sufficient time to study the legislation before
it is debated in parliament.
"The
government knew for several months that they were going to have
this legislation in place by the end of June, so to come at
this last moment and try to rush this legislation through without
any discussion by the public about this piece of legislation,
is a failure of this government to understand the purpose of
parliament...", he said.
"While
we express our support for the CSME, we express our absolute
disgust and horror at the attempt by the government to push
through legislation at this last moment", he added.
