Sacked Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Willan Thompson is being transferred to a desk job at the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA).

Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that the Public Service Commission (PSC), headed by retired high court judge, Monica Joseph has decided to transfer Thompson from his post with the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to NaDMA “special assignment”.

Thompson is one of two senior police officers that the Keith Mitchell-led New National Party (NNP) government decided to transfer from the force in the wake of RGPF’s dismal performance during the passage of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.

The other is ACP Maurice Darius who has already left his desk at Police headquarters at Fort George (Rupert). Since Ivan, there has been a major shake-up within the hierarchy of the police force with the then Commissioner Fitzroy Bedeau being forced out of the job.

Bedeau, a known supporter of the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, has been awarded a lucrative contract as a Security Advisor for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. The contract of Deputy Commissioner of Police James Clarkson was not renewed and he is now in charge of security at the new Cruise Ship Port.

The force is now headed by Acting Commissioner of Police Winston James with his two assistants being John Charles and Raymond Charles. A report into the performance of the police force during the passage of Ivan was extremely critical of the performance of the Police High Command especially Bedeau and ACP Darius who was the officer in charge of operations.

It said the police lacked leadership and that COP Bedeau appeared to be waiting on political directions on what to do as Ivan ripped through the island and looters went on the rampage.
