A 24-year old mother of Windsor Forest, St. David’s is the nation’s first road fatality for the new year. She is Rockal Toussaint who died when the vehicle she was driving last Saturday night ran off the St. Paul’s main road near the areas known as “White Gun” and plunged some 200 feet below into the area known as “Jumbie”.

Toussaint was the driver of a Suzuki GEO registered # PF853 and in the vehicle with her were her 10 and 2 year old daughters. Sister of the deceased Gailiane Toussaint told GRENADA TODAY that Rockal had visited her and left just after 8.00 p.m. after collecting her two daughters who had spent the day at her (Gailiane's) home for the return trip to Windsor Forest.

She said that when she got the sad news that her sister had died in an accident she just could not believe it. She spoke of doubting it until she got a telephone call from a friend who repeated the terrible news to her.

An eyewitness who claimed to be driving in a vehicle behind the deceased said that the young mother was not driving at a fast pace when the vehicle ran off the road. He said that everything happened so quickly and that all he saw was the vehicle catapulting.

According to unconfirmed reports all the occupants in the vehicle were thrown out of the vehicle before the Suzuki was brought to a halt. There are reports that several persons who assembled on the spot rushed down the slope in the darkness of the night without lights to try and locate the passengers of the vehicle.

One of the persons who indicated that he assisted in the rescue mission said that the children were located due to their cries. He said the children were brought back up to the main road and rushed to the St. George’s General Hospital for medical attention.

The frantic search continued for the mother who was found still alive and apparently in her last dying seconds. She is said to have asked the rescuers to contact her fiance and gave them the telephone numbers to reach him.

The two daughters are still hospitalised but in stable condition. The sister of the deceased said that the youngest daughter should be released very soon but there is still serious concerns about the condition of the 10 year old. She is said to be experiencing severe pains.

The White Gun area is considered to be very dangerous and over the years several vehicles have run off the road and down into the Jumbie area.
