Twelve Grenadians with physical disabilities have been given the opportunity to equip themselves with the knowledge of using a computer.

The training was made possible through a computer training programme initiated by the Grenada National Council of the Disabled with Hankey’s Computer Services (HCS). The project is being funded by the United Nations Education Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and was launched last Wednesday at GNCD ‘s newly refurbished office on Scott Street, St George.

In addressing the ceremony, Coordinator of the Council, Hillary Gabriel encouraged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunity being given to them and to put the training into use after completion of the programme.

Parliamentary representative for the Town of St George, Peter David who was in attendance indicated that all persons have abilities and disabilities, as well as strengths and weaknesses and that programmes like these will strengthen the ability of all Grenadians. David told the gathering that the training being received is not only important to the participants but the country as a whole.

He noted that one of the world’s leading physicists is a disabled person, but despite his challenges was able to make a remarkable contribution to the world.
Minister of Social Services, Yolande Bain-Hosford was also on hand for the launch and thanked UNESCO for sponsoring the project.

She was confident that the computer training project will touch the hearts of many people in Grenada. Bain-Horsford announced that one person with disabilities may soon be employed as a Secretary within the Ministry of Education.
A representative from Hankey’s Computer, Rhonda Penny who was on hand assured the participants and the promoters of the project that the company will work diligently and patiently with the students to ensure that they are provided with a comfortable working environment where they can learn effectively.

In brief remarks, Senior Planning Officer, Ministry of Education, Pauline Finley, stated that it was not often that one can find young people willing to work with persons with disabilities. Finley stressed that the training received by these persons will prepare them to function in a new environment.

The training will be conducted over a period of six months under the theme, “Introduction to Personal Computers”. It entails Basic Computer literacy, key-boarding and word processing. Participants will be attending classes three days per week for two hours from 1:00 p.m -3:00 p.m.
