On the 32nd Anniversary of Independence, Grenadians are told to forge greater unity for the greater development of the Nation.

Speaking at the 2006 Independence Ecumenical Service, which was held at the St. Andrew‚s Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, Commissioner John Mateur of the Salvation Army noted that a Nation comes alive when people are united in God. He told the large congregation that unity can be a powerful signal in today’s fragmented world.

“In unity, there is responsibility and all citizens should hear the words of the Lord and respond to him and do what is needed to be done in his name”, said the Salvation Army official. Commissioner Mateur mentioned that “this is God’s moment‚ and the God of grace has given Grenada this opportunity to rid Grenada of all that is wrong and the things that are not in accord with our destiny”.

Referring to the 2006 Independence theme, “Promoting Growth, Stability and Poverty Alleviation”, the Salvation Army territorial Commissioner explained that Independence carries with it a great level of freedom and on this basis a great deal of responsibility must be exercised.

He reminisced on the events of hurricanes Ivan and Emily, which unleashed widespread devastation on Grenada, ultimately hampering the standard of living of citizens and the economy, as a whole. “Citizens need to know the responsibility that is placed on their shoulders in being able to come together, especially as it concerns helping the less fortunate in their midst”, he told the congregation.

“As a people of courage, Grenadians must dedicate themselves to put their heads, hearts and hands together for the good of all”, he said. The 2006 Independence Ecumenical Service was attended by Government Officials, Church groups, and several service clubs and community organizations.

Grenada attained Independence from Britain on February 7, 1974.
