A
local pre-school in St. Andrew's is to get $10, 000 from "Team
Jamaica Hurricane Ivan Relief".
The funds will be handed over to the Sab Pre-School by a representative
from the Jamaican outfit,, Irwine Clare to build a kitchen and
a play area for the students. The money was raised in 2004 by
a group of radio personalities, including Bobby Clarke of Irie
Jam Radio, David Annakie of Link-Up Radio and Carl Moxie of 93.5
FM in New York, who donated their airtime to host a radiothon
to raise monies and contributions for Jamaica and the Caribbean
in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.
Many businesses contributed to the cause including Trans Continental
Shippers and Denis Shippers as well as several Jamaica organisations
such as UJAA, the Jamaica Progressive League, Jampact, Hardbeatnews,
CIS and WRTN Radio while Cox Nissan of the Bronx, NY donated his
car lot to host the event.
Over $55,000 was raised from the endeavor along with 150 barrels
of food items. Clare who is the Managing Director of the Caribbean
Immigrant Services, Inc, a New York based advocacy organisation,
was expected in Grenada on Tuesday as a guest of the Lions Club
of St Andrew's which is celebrating its 35th anniversary.
He was expected to make the contribution then to the rural school,
located in St. Andrew North-west. In the spirit of "One Caribbean"
and One Caribbean People, Team Jamaica Hurricane Ivan Relief,
committed to contribute to Grenada.
"It is our hope that this contribution will assist those
persons in our community who are most disadvantaged to regain
a semblance of normalcy," said Clare.
The Lions Club was due to host a town hall forum Wednesday at
the St Andrew's Anglican Primary School beginning at 6 p.m. featuring
Clare as the guest speaker.
