The Children's
Carnival Frolic staged last Satursday at the Tanteen Recreation
Grounds dubbed as "Carnival City", Saturday saw the
crowning of a new Junior Calypso Monarch.
She is
Monique "Monique" Cummings who stole the crown from
the defending champion, Etieron "Prince Tyrone" Edwards
following an impressive rendition called, "Singing Nothing".
"Prince
Tyrone" was forced to settle for 3rd place, one spot behind
2nd place winner, Antonia "Zina"Simon who sang, "Passa
Passa". Lendon Telesford (Rico) was 4th, the 5th spot went
to Dahlia "Little D"Alexander with "Doh Drive
Me Crazy", and 6th Cinika "Cinika" Moses (Beat
the Books).
The others
in the competition were Navina "Navina" Francis (Don't
Leave Them), Shanieka "Queen Shanieka" Alexander (Please
Help), Jorine "Sweet J" Felix (Nice & Easy) and
Omega "Omega" Antoine (You Can't Move So). Eleven
bands paraded on the streets, starting on the Carenage and into
Carnival city, accompanied by the sound of popular local soca
music.
Hundreds
of spectators turned out to support the young masqueraders and
calypsonians as they officially opened the carnival season.
Kai Antoine, Crystal John and Tiffany Charles received the individual
Mas prizes.
Kai and
Crystal were also awarded the Junior King and Queen of Carnival.
The Band of the Year award went to Helen Marie & Associates
with "Things We Love", followed by Mt. Moritz Community
and in 3rd spot, Lazarus Antoine & Associates.
In the
Junior Panorama section, AGD Whizkids retained the first place
for the second consecutive year. AGD Whizkids won from Cable
& Wireless Commancheros and Republic Bank Junior Harpers
respectively.
Five steelbands
competed in this year's competition.
