The Easter holiday ended in sorrow as three families were plunged into mourning following the deaths of their loved ones both in Carriacou and Grenada over the holidays.

Dead are 41-year old Michael Sylvester of Tempe; 57-year old Roy Benoit of Boca, St George’s; and 58-year old Fitz Molton Scott of Belmont, Carriacou.

The lives of Sylvester and Benoit were cut shot after the vehicle in which they were travelling slammed into a telephone pole and catapulted, trapping and seriously injuring the occupants along the Lagoon Road close to Glean’s Garage at approximately 6:15 p.m on Easter Monday.

The area was littered with blood and what remained of the vehicle. In a matter of seconds after the accident, scores of on-lookers from within the community and passersby flocked the scene as word spread about the vehicular accident which claimed the lives of some of the occupants.

According to an eye-witness, the Black with Silver trimming Mitsubishi Lancer registered #PD585 driven by Sylvester was seen minutes before speeding along the Lagoon Road, coming from the Grand Anse area.

The driver reportedly overtook two vehicles but on reaching the Lagoon Road/Belmont junction, another vehicle was seen approaching from the opposite direction. Sylvester tried to turn into the road leading to Belmont but slammed into the telephone pole.

Benoit died on the spot while Sylvester died shortly after he was taken to the St. George’s General Hospital. Sylvester was an employee at Grenada Electrical Contractors located at Tempe, St George’s.

Infant escaped deathAt the time of the accident there were six persons in the vehicle including two children Daniel and Brandonna. The other passengers were Maria and Keisha. All four survivors were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Three were described as being in critical condition, but Brandonna managed to escape death with only a few bruises. The little girl was released and is presently at home with her family at Boca.

Wife of one of the deceased, Michelle Benoit told Grenada Today that the family was returning from a fun day at the beach when the accident occurred. The mother said that she and other family members and friends were travelling home in a bus while her husband and several others were in the car driven by Sylvester.

She stated that on approaching the Lagoon Road area she noticed a Police Officer and thought that he was attending to just another small accident. She did not realise the serious magnitude of it, more so that it involved members of her own family.

Mrs. Benoit said that when she was close to her home she received a call on her cell phone from one of her daughters, requesting her to come to the hospital immediately. She later found out that the accident she had passed only a few minutes earlier actually took the life of her husband and that the other occupants in the car were in a serious condition at the hospital.

In Carriacou, it was reported that Molton Scott died following an accident involving a truck last week Friday. The weekend incidents on the nation’s road brings to six the number of persons to have died in vehicular accidents for the year.

Traffic Department officers on the island are continuing their investigations into the causes of both accidents.
