Senator, Keith Clouden has called on the Government to disclose
to the nation who is responsible for granting permission to one
Kulwinder Cheema, a so-called businessman from India to exploit
a natural spring water resource in the government’s forest
reserve at Cocoa Dee in St. David’s for his personal and
private benefit.
The Independent
Senator said that the nation’s forest reserves and natural
resources like ground water should never be compromised to any
foreign interest.
As such,
he is calling on the Keith Mitchell Government to promptly put
a stop to any further development of this project by the foreign
Indian businessman. Sen. Clouden stated that government needed
to act more responsibly to ensue that the island’s natural
resources are always protected and safeguarded against being infringed
upon or exploited by non-nationals.
He wants
the administration to give disclosure to any agreement it has
with Cheema “to exploit and sell our natural spring water
for his personal profit”.
According
to Sen. Clouden, if there is no agreement between Government and
Cheema, then the administration should move ahead and “legally
prosecute Mr. Kulwinder Cheema for unlawfully trespassing and
causing destruction to the forest reserve as well as fraud as
a whole”.
The farmer’s
representative in the Senate is advocating that only the National
Water & Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) or Grenadians should be
allowed to exploit the water resources of Grenada.
