STATEMENT
FROM THE LEADER OF OPPOSITION & LEADER OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC
CONGRESS, TILLMAN THOMAS ON ALLEGATIONS OF UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
AGAINST AN EXECUTIVE MEMBER OF THE PARTY
Sometime last week I became aware for the very first time of a report
carried about an executive member of our Party.
This reported allegation of unprofessional conduct was quite shocking
and a surprise, and at serious odds with my personal beliefs and
that of the National Democratic Congress and its covenant with the
Grenadian people to ensure the highest standards in both our private
and professional lives as well as in public office.
Those standards and principles are applicable whether one currently
holds Public Office or is an aspirant to such office. My duty as
Leader of the National Democratic Congress dictates that I act with
dispatch to get to the bottom of this and, if necessary, to take
appropriate corrective action.
I have since called in the Medical Doctor concerned and have commenced
an inquiry. However, I wish to make it clear that the reported claim
in the Spice Island Review newspaper that the mother of the alleged
young victim had spoken to me is absolutely and completely false.
Up to the time of writing this release I have had no contact with
the young lady or her mother. The newspaper report further goes
on to state that I had told the mother of having had several complaints
of unprofessional behavior regarding the Doctor concerned.
Again, this is absolutely false. One cannot help but wonder about
the motivation behind this baseless allegation. We have always stated
that the NDC is a party with a difference - one that is prepared
to lead by example, not only to talk the talk, but also to walk
the walk.
That why our approach to allegations of political, personal or professional
misconduct against our members would be different to that of the
New National Party regime. We treat such allegations seriously,
investigate thoroughly, give those accused a full opportunity to
be heard, and after mature and considered deliberation, take appropriate
action.
We are convinced that with such a mature and level-headed approach,
we shall emerge a stronger, effective and more respected party.
