Police
Detain 3 Trinis
Quick
work by Grenada police have apparently cracked a major ring involving
nationals of Trinidad and Tobago to raid a number of Automated Teller
Machines (ATM¹s) belonging to some of the major commercial
banks on the island.
The lawmen have already slapped six counts of stealing money on
three Trinidadians - Derek Maloney, aged 44 of Morvant, 23-year
old Kristol Pereia who described herself as a Secretary of Morvant
and 49-year old Kevin Snaggs who is said to be a mechanic.
Well-placed sources told this newspaper that it is more than likely
that another six counts of stealing would be slapped on the three
suspects within the next few hours.
The trio arrived in the country on Friday night and by Saturday
had allegedly tampered with ATM machines in both Grand Anse and
St. George¹s. According to police insiders, the lawmen reportedly
recovered thousands of dollars that the suspects allegedly managed
to get out of some of the machines.
One official said that the Trini schemers were able to take out
$18, 000.00 from one of the ATM¹s that belonged to a German
couple that was visiting the island. He also spoke of more than
$3000.00 being ripped off from a number of locals who
have ATMs with some of the commercial banks.
The police are working on the theory that the Trinidadians were
able to steal large sums of money from other ATMs in a number of
Caribbean islands before moving into Grenada. Speculation is rife
that the Trinidadians managed to pounce on a number of unsuspecting
victims who were having problems in accessing monies from their
ATMs.
The fraudsters allegedly targeted mainly foreigners who were suspected
of having large banking accounts.
The police apprehended the Trinidadians on Sunday, one day before
they were due to fly out of the Point Salines International Airport
(PSIA).
