Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is back home after a secret visit to Libya to meet with military strongman, Colonel Mu’Ammar Al-Gadhafi to ask for financial and economic assistance.

Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that Dr. Mitchell returned to the island on Friday night in the company of his Foreign Minister, Elvin Nimrod. According to a well-placed source, the Grenadian leader was asked by the Libyans not to make any public announcement about the trip.

There was no formal announcement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Government Information Service (GIS) or the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) on Dr. Mitchell’s trip to Libya. The source said that the details of the trip were not co-ordinated by the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs for fears about possible leaks. He could not confirm whether Minister Nimrod accompanied the Grenadian leader on the trip to Libya.

The source said he knew that Nimrod was expected to travel to London to represent the Prime Minister at a major fund-raising dinner planned by Grenadians living in Britain. “Dr. Mitchell was originally invited to attend the function in London but he decided to send Nimrod instead since he had to go to Libya to beg Gadhafi for money”, he added.

A few years ago, Dr. Mitchell and some East Caribbean Prime Minister and a few prominent opposition figures with close ties to Gadhafi leaders travelled to Libya to meet with the country’s military leader to discuss a financial and aid package for the island.

The Grenadian leader has not given the local parliament details about the promised financial package from Libya.

Grenada is currently experiencing several financial difficulties in light of a massive debt estimated at close to 2 billion E.C dollars and plans to ask creditors for a 25-year moratorium.
