As the world celebrates World Teacher Day, a teacher at the St.Louis Girls Roman Catholic School was recognised for her 41 years of service at the School. Last Wednesday, St. Louis R.C together with the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) recognised Judith Ann-Rose Mitchell during a short ceremony at the school. “Miss Mitchell” as she is called by her students, admitted that she is just a simple, versatile, warm-hearted, humorous individual who is passionate about the Lord. She also said that she is committed to creating a positive impact on the tender lives that are entrusted to her daily care. “Miss Mitchell” started teaching in 1964 under the leadership of the late Sister Monica Agustini, Principal of the school at the time. She was offered a job after being successful in the School Leaving Examination that year. The primary school teacher stated that her childhood dream was to become a teacher, and although she only received a monthly remuneration of $5.00, that did not stop her from fulfilling her goal with great determination and sacrifice. She later attained six O' level passes after taking private lessons and in 1983 she became a qualified teacher. “Miss Mitchell” pointed out that in her teaching career, she attended several workshops which helped to enhance her teaching techniques. She received extensive training in remedial reading and is presently the Language Arts Coordinator at the girls school. The
school teacher who is the last of six children, has been training the
school choirs from as far back a the 1980's. Wife and mother of four,
“Miss Mitchell” was also awarded by the Ministry of Culture
for her contribution to the cultural life of the school. “Miss Mitchell” said: "I believe that education is the allround development of the child and in my capacity, I function not merely as a teacher but in cases as a mother, mentor and friend. "My greatest satisfaction comes from seeing my pass and present students blossom over the years. I believe that every child truly is unique and can learn if we as teachers exercise a little patience and intertwine our teaching methods with love", she remarked. On World Teachers Day, teachers' organisations worldwide mobilise to ensure that the needs of future generations are taken into consideration in this increasingly complex, multi-cultural and technological world. More than 100 countries worldwide observe World Teachers' Day. |
