Primary schools teachers in Grenada are being encouraged to adopt a new method of teaching in their classrooms.

More than 40 teachers attended the two-day workshop held at the Ministry of Education last week, where they were asked to use the Integrated Approach.

Publisher for Longman in the Caribbean, Kate Roberts who was one of the facilitator of the workshop, disclosed that the new method involves the combination of comprehension, spelling, composition, reading, and grammar, over the old standard approach.

She disclosed that the integrated approach makes skills taught relevant to pupils’ needs, so that they can use these skills naturally in their everyday communication. Roberts revealed although the Ministry of Education advocates the new approach, the older teachers are more resistant to it, while the younger teachers are very accepting.
She indicated that the workshop was a wonderful opportunity to hear from the teachers who are using the books, their problems and success stories in using the new teaching technique.

According to the Publisher, similar workshops have been held in Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago. Author of the book, Worrall Anne pointed out that the integrated approach makes teaching more interesting, meaningful and more enjoyable for the students and teachers.

The Keskidee books were introduced in the Caribbean more than ten years ago and publishers of the books have been trying to get teachers throughout the Caribbean to use the integrated methods over the standard approach.
