The National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago (NGC) has contributed two million TT dollars to the Grenada Athletic Association (GAA) for use on a programme aimed at developing and identifying athletes in the Spice Isle.

Known as the "Right on Track" programme or ROT, the scheme was launched last week Wednesday at a ceremony hosted by GAA at Tropicana Inn Conference Room in the Lagoon Road, St. George's.

In addressing the ceremony, President of GAA, Charles George said that the ROT initiative seeks to establish a sound developmental programme for athletes in Grenada, as well as optimise coaching opportunities for identified athletes. According to George, the programme will target athletes between the ages of 8-18, as well as identify Physical Education Teachers and Track and Field Coaches.

The GAA will be responsible for identifying the athletes through a Coaching Caravan that started last Saturday. It will be hosted in different parishes every Saturday until December. The athletes will be identified in the areas of sprints, hurdles, high jump and javelin sessions to be conducted in rotation.

GAA is encouraging parents to accompanying their children to the caravans in order to give them their support. The ROT programme also seeks to establish a developmental coaching cadre in athletics and to identify existing and potential coaches for training at the various levels.

NGC's Wynda Chandler sees the programme as significant and a positive step towards Caribbean integration. She said that some 3,500 athletes throughout the Caribbean have benefitted from the programme being funded by the oil company from the oil-rich republic.

Chandler added that NGC is hopeful that track and field stars and well-rounded individuals can be produced in the programme.
