It's now a reality - an agreement has been reached between government and bus operators in the country for an increase in bus fares on certain routes. According to an official government release an agreement to this effect was signed between Transport Minister Clarice Modeste-Curwen and President of the National Bus Association, Lewis Rouse.

The release said the Bus Association agreed that "increases in bus fares will not occur before planned increases in fuel prices take effect and further that a specific date for such increases shall be set by mutual agreement". The price of gas is expected to move from $7.50 to $8.50 a gallon shortly.

The release was not clear on whether bus fares will increase on theroutes from St. Patrick's to St. George's, as well as St. Mark's to St. George's, St. David's to the city, and Grenville to St. George's. However, it indicated that Minister Modeste-Curwen and the members of the Bus Association agreed on the following:

ADULTS

(I) Adults will pay a fare of $2.00 for all trips which begin and end within the same parish.

For trips which cross parish boundaries, for example from St. George's to St. John's, the adult fare shall be as follows:

(a). EC $2.00 For all trips three miles or less in distance.
(b). Fixed fares for specific distance above three miles. For the immediate period a maximum of $0.50 shall be added to existing inter-parish fares for trips more than three miles long.

CHILDREN AND STUDENTS

(I) All pre-primary and primary school students in and out of uniform shall pay half the adult fare for any route.

(II) All Secondary school students, in and out of uniform shall pay a fixed fare of EC $1.50 to travel on any route.

(III) Full time students at TAMCC or other similar institutions and not including students of the St. George's University, shall pay fares as follows

(a) A fixed fare of $1.50 for all trips which begin and end within the same Parish.

(b) An additional $0.50 on all existing fares for trips which cross parish boundaries.

It was agreed at the meeting that the Association will present to the Minister of Transport a detailed list of adult and child fares for all inter parish routes.
The Minister will verify the list and direct the Association to make corrections if necessary. The renewal of route stickers was another issue discussed at the meeting and included in the Memorandum of Understanding.

It was agreed that all processes related to the renewal of route stickers, including the payment of fees will be deferred until both the Minister and the Association are satisfied that appropriate measures are being taken to enforce existing route regulations.

Meanwhile, government announced Tuesday the setting up of a task force to investigate the establishment of a school bus system. It will be chaired by Minister of Education, Claris Charles and Minister of Communications, Works and Transport, Clarice Modeste-Curwen.

"The proposed school bus system is in line with Government's policy of providing assistance and resources to the most vulnerable groups in society", it said in an official release. It stated that the Mitchell government is looking into the establishment of this system for a number of reasons.

(1). To assist with the ever spiralling costs of bus fares for families with children in school.

(2). To ensure that students arrive and leave school on time.

(3). To prevent school children from being left on the streets because of the limited availability of seats on buses.

(4). To protect children from the negative influences which may be transmitted on public buses.
