The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Government of Grenada is reconstructing 18 primary schools that were damaged during the ravages of Hurricane Ivan. Plans for the School Hurricane Reconstruction Programme (SHRP) were revealed during a press conference to members of the press and well wishers last Thursday at the T.A. Marryshow Community College Hospitality Center. SHRP's Chief Technical Officer, Sonjai Reynolds said that as a part the programme, TAMCC's Teachers Education Unit will be reconstructed. Reynolds pointed out that the College is also the home of the Centre of Excellence in Teachers Training (CETT), a privileged US presidential initiative, which aims to strengthen internal and external teachers ability to teach reading more effectively. This is why, she said it is imperative that the reconstruction of the college is needed to be done soon. According to Reynolds,
USAID has donated US$9140, 000 for the reconstruction of 18 primary
schools involved in the CETT programme. Reynolds pointed out that the BEST team will issue tenders approximately every two weeks, as the goal is to complete all the primary schools in the CETT programme then work with the Ministry of Education to identify additional primary schools that need support. Ambassador of the United States Mary Kramer referred to Education Minister, Claris Charles as "the champion for the children of Grenada", saying that the Minister's energy and leadership got the children back in school. The programme will cost $8.5m. Schools to benefit in the first phrase of the project that is expected to be competed by April are, the Grand Anse R.C School, Mt. Mortiz Anglican School, Happy Hill R.C School, St. Dominic's R.C School, Tivoli R.C School, Telescope Government School, St. Michael's R.C School, River Salle Government School, Bonair Government School and Petite Martinique R.C School. The aim of the programme is to restore, furnish and equip Primary Schools to pre-Ivan condition or better using hurricane mitigation construction methods as quickly as possible. There are 58 primary schools in Grenada all of which were damaged during Hurricane Ivan. |
