Cuban workers in Grenada

The Grenada Electricity Services Ltd, GRENLEC, expresses thanks to all its customers and restoration teams as we face the pen-ultimate stage of mass re-electrification after Ivan: a process due to be completed by April 15.

Our post-Ivan peak demand is at 19.6 Megawatts, almost 80% of the pre Ivan peak of Megawatts and 85% of the primary distribution system has been repaired and restored to service.

The company is largely on course, except for a few places where we are currently about a week behind schedule. In a number of other areas we are ahead of schedule and will use some of these teams to bring the relevant locations up to speed.

The Cubans are the largest number of overseas support at this time and we want to publicly convey our gratitude to the Cuban workers, people and Government for the unwavering support, which they have provided to GRENLEC and the people of Grenada. The Cuban assistance to Grenada was made possible through a special Government-to-Government arrangement and all discussions and negotiations since the start of the assistance has been on Government-to-Government basis.

The Government of Grenada has really been very responsive to GRENLEC's request for continued Cuban assistance and we are truly grateful for the Government's support in this regard. We owe a special debt of gratitude to them for their assistance and to the public for the strong show of support for the local and international teams, which rendered assistance.

It is noteworthy that this assistance has been provided at great sacrifice to the Cuban Government and people who sent a large contingent of personnel to Grenada to assist even when they were needed to help in their own work to recover from the effects of Charley and Ivan.

The Cuban government has indicated that their restoration assistance will end on March 10 because of pressing needs for these resources back in Cuba. The Grenadian Government has been making a special appeal to the Cuban Government for additional assistance but if the Cuban Government does not find this possible, we think they have really extended themselves immensely and we feel the entire Grenadian public share our gratitude for the tremendous assistance they are providing in the restoration of power to our nation.
