The way Insurance Industries in Grenada and the region handle the effects of natural disasters such as hurricane Ivan is the topic of the 7th Annual Sir Archibald Nedd Memorial Lecture planned for June 30 at the Grenada Trade Center in the south of the island.

It is organised by the Grenada Bar Association (GBA) as part of its ongoing public education drive. GBA President, Ruggles Ferguson told reporters on Tuesday that the feature address at this year's lecture will be delivered by the Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley who is also the island's Attorney General.

Mottley is the second female to deliver the key-note address at the Memorial Lecture since it started seven years ago. Ferguson pointed out that over the years the event dealt with several legal and judicial issues.

He said they have decided on changing the topic this year because of problems faced by home owners in processing their claims in the aftermath of the hurricane. Several policy holders have complained about not being properly compensated by their insurers for damages to their properties from Ivan.

The Insurance industry hit back, saying that several policy holders have under insured their properties because they do not want to pay a high premium for proper insurance. The problem between insurers and policy holders had forced Cabinet to appoint a three member team to look into complaints made by some members of the public with respect to problems encountered regarding the processing and payments of claims by Insurance companies.

The committee was headed by Education and Labour Minister Claris Charles, Tourism Minister Senator Brenda Hood and Minister of State responsible for Business and Private Sector Development, Senator Einstein Louison. The GBA has over the years been able to attract several prominent regional officials to address its functions.

The list includes the Prime Minister of St Vincent & the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, St. Lucia's Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony and Queens Counsel Bernice Lake. Sir Archibald Nedd was a former Chief Justice of Grenada during the reign of the 1979-83 People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) of late marxist leader Maurice Bishop.
