"If you don't
climb the mountain, you wouldn't see the view". This was one of
the many inspirational sentiments given to thirty-eight (38) scholarship
awardees to study in Mexico on scholarships from the Government of Mexico. Permanent Secretary in the Department of Human Resources, Beryl Isaac who addressed the gathering said that the awardees are among the finest young people in the county. Isaac called them pioneers and trail blazers, since they are the first set of students from Grenada to receive scholarships to study in Mexico. She disclosed that 215 applications were received from Grenadians for the scholarships but only 65 were accepted. The students will leave the country throughout the course of this week to start their five-and-a-half years stint in Mexico. Isaac told the eager young people to be good ambassadors to Grenada by respecting the laws of the foreign country which has been good to allow them to study in the country. She exhorted the awardees to make the most out of the opportunity given to them sice it would not only benefit them but also the country. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell who was present for the ceremony reinforced the point by advising the awardees to work hard and with consistency by producing good results on a regular basis. Dr. Mitchell said
that while he is extremely happy to see the scholarship awardees going
abroad to study, there is still a lot of young people who want an opportunity
like them to broaden their education but cannot afford to do so. The Prime Minister stressed that his Government is committed to investing in the education of the nation, and as such so he is seeking more scholarships from other countries. He disclosed that a College in New York has agreed to provide several scholarships to Grenadians, and it is presently short-listing applications. In addition, he said that government is negotiation with Chile, to provide scholarships for Grenadians. Prime Minister Mitchell wished the scholarship awardees good luck in their new journey, adding that he hopes a large number of them will return and make a contribution to nation building. Minister of State for Youth Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office, Senator Emmalin Pierre who also spoke at the ceremony pointed to a false perception in the country about Government Scholarships. She said it is often believed that there is favoritism in choosing persons for scholarships to study aboard but the awardees selected for study in Mexico will change that perception. She told the young Grenadians that she admired the determination they showed in getting the scholarships, and that they should always put God into their daily life. The 38 awardees will pursue undergraduate studies in 12 subjects. They are Malisha Compton, Dalia Joseph, Roxanne Marquez, Kisha Alexis (International Relations), Diyanna Gulston, Ryan Joseph, Andy Lendore, Alicia Bubb, Shawnaly Pascal, Jenson Charles, Stephann St.John, Shevon Alexander, Sabrina Rodney, Cantia Richard (Economics), Talisha Alexander, Sahai Gibbs, Shamin Lewis (Foreign Trade), Jamie Slyvester, Shonda Harris, Anna Ogilvie (Tourism), Dunnaliz Peters (Linguistics), Kerry Mitchell, Andy Frank (Environment Science), Trevor Noel (Environment Engineering), Sheldon Baptiste, Sheldon Lewis, Zsika Phillip, Kareem Cyrus (Systems Engineering), Javan Williams, Davrell Bhola, Markimba Williams, Terah Nash, (Industrial Engineering), Surrona Francis, Sabrina Fleming (Communication Science), Micah Isaac (Agricultural Engineering), Marva Antione and Lynette Isaac (Pedagogy). |
