The National Children's Home (NCH) said that the scarcity of funds especially in the aftermath of hurricane Ivan has delayed a number of projects and programmes it embarked upon in recent years.

This was disclosed last Friday by Senior Manager NCH, Cecilia Ann John during a presentation ceremony of a cheque to the Home by the Grenada Cablevision. She said that they are yet to receive word from Government as to whether or not they will be entitled to their annual subvention to assist the Home in its daily operations.

John spoke of the NCH being overwhelmed because of the amount of work to be done and the slow funds that are coming into the organisation. The NCH Senior Manager thanked Grenada Cablevision for the donation saying that the money will help a needy family in repairing their home in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Sales & Marketing Manager of Grenada Cablevision Ltd, Gail Purcell who presented the cheque to the local charity stated that the money was made available through the generosity of the Caribbean Cable & Telecommunications Association (CCTA) Charities Programme in which Cablevision is a member.

According to Purcell, NCH was nominated for the grant because of the service it provided to the community over the years. She pointed out that monies given to them by CCTA over the years were presented to three local charities - the Programme for Adolescent Mothers (PAM) Cosmetology Programme, the Grenada Community Development Agency (GRENCODA) Summer Camp for young people and the Tufton Hall Audio Visual Project for boys.

The CCTA's Community Charities Programme, established in 1993, has awarded nearly US $140, 000 to Caribbean charities since its existence. The programme traditionally awards ten grants per year however the Board of Directors voted unanimously to assist all of the nominees this year.

Formed in 1983, the CCTA represents cable and telecommunications providers throughout the Caribbean, as well as the programmers, software and hardware suppliers that support them.

Members of the CCTA are Bermuda Cablevision; Cable Company of Trinidad and Tobago; Caribbean Broadcasting Corp. of Barbados; Centennial Cable TV of Puerto Rico and Choice Communications of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The list is completed by Innovative Cable TV St. Croix; Innovative Cable TV St. Thomas - St. John; Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico; St. Lucia Cablevision; SAT Telecommunications of Dominica; Telecable of the Dominican Republic; The Cable of St. Kitts; and Wireless Telecommunications of St. Marteen.
